Chapter 15
Zero
I canât do this.
Are there different degrees of fear of heights? Because hanging out above the rush of the water in Victoria Falls seemed easy. If I tumbled over, I would surely die, guaranteed. But being at the top of the Ferris wheel, I want my money back. If we fall, we will get paralyzed or become zombies.
The Ferris wheel lights the entire park like it was built to entertain.
âAre you scared of the Ferris wheel?â Lieve moves and shakes our cage enough that I hold the frame with both hands.
âStop moving! Are you sure this thing can hold my weight? God, how did I let you talk me into this? Savvy! Where is he?â I shift frantically to see where my best friend is and if he is close enough to save me.
âZero, we havenât even started moving yet,â Savvy says in the lowest, most annoyed voice.
âThe fuck are you saying? I am tilting ass over nose here, bro!â But I realize I am making things shake because I freeze when the whole death trap starts to rotate.
My wife to my left laughs, covering her mouth just slightly.
âYou think this is funny?â I squeeze my eyes shut and try to remember what solid ground feels like.
âI mean, you are a giant, over six feet tall, and seeing you scared of...â Lieve leans forward.
âDonât do that!â
âBabe, we are going to be okay.â Her hand pulls mine away from the railing, just one because someone has to be the sensible one in the relationship.
âYou called me babe.â My smile grows a little more, with fear fading just an inch.
She stares at me, shakes her head with a low grin, and then puts her face up to the skies. Then I see the tiny edges of sharp hope where she might dare a little too much to wish to have an everyday existence next to me.
In the corners of her eyes, they crinkle as she takes away the shield she has on for the rest of the world.
âOh no, Zero! I feel an earthquake coming!â Savvy wants to be murdered; I know he does; he wouldnât say such things unless he would like to meet an early death.
But I can only flip him off because I am in a trance, and I wonât look away as I witness another side of my wife.
âI used to hate the color blue for some reason.â God, that little chuckle gets me every time. She pushes a piece of hair away from her face so I can see her better. âSome girls grow up hating pink and purple, not that color is specified by gender or anything. I just remember growing up and thinking how it was associated with innocence.â Lieve bites her lip as she squints back up. âBut blue, I didnât understand it; it felt so cold, too bold, and then like a bruise. After a while, I realized I hated it so much because it connected with me in ways I didnât know how to explain other than its hue.
